Spiritual mapping
We believe that every place (town, city or nation) has a God-ordained destiny and identity, and the job of the spiritual mapper is to clarify what these are in order to call them forth through prayer and intercession. There's an incredible destiny related to the city of Jerusalem for example:
For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow. You will be a crown of splendour in the Lord's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord will take delight in you, and your land will be married (Isaiah 62:1-4).
Spiritual mapping is the process of prayerfully building up a picture of a location based on the influences affecting it. Spiritual mappers for instance look beyond the natural characteristics of a place, i.e. ancient or modern, spacious or congested, attractive or ugly. In building up a profile they hope to discover God's purpose for it together with the factors working for and against. Features such as historic battles, the intention of the founder, local geography, the role played by local and civic leaders, unresolved disputes, etc, are some of the factors they will look out for - indeed, anything that affects the area in any way.
Once the mapper has built up a picture they are better equipped to pray for the release of God's original destiny and identity. In recent years we've been involved in prayer for towns and cities (at times praying at strategic sites) both at home and abroad, where we've sought to release God's blessing and heart - spiritual mapping has played a significant part in this process.
